Olde Soul
Olde Soul is a Los Angeles based beatmaker and producer. His interest in hip hop production was sparked by Too $hort’s “Life is… Too Short.” The production on Public Enemy’s “It Takes a Nation of Millions…” and Young MC’s “Stone Cold Rhymin’,” Oldie’s first tapes, further piqued his interest in the beats.
By the age of ten, Oldie became the resident beatboxer on 11th St. Growing up in the Mid-City district of Los Angeles afforded him opportunities to comb this unique section of L.A.’s thrift stores, record stores, and neighbors’ record collections. Raiding his father’s stash didn’t hurt either. This multi-genre collection of records would be Olde Soul’s DJing selections and beatmaking instruments. This pastime also kept Oldie from some of the negative situations in and around the neighborhood.
Blood, sweat, years, and classic collaborations later, Olde Soul prides himself on being the “Mid-City Maestro,” with a sound best described as vintage, yet cutting-edge. Originality and quality production sum up Oldie’s method of operations. Being part of the solution, instead of the problem [in music], continues to be the focus for this West Coast b-boy.
